Ask most Land Rover owners what worries them and they will say the engine. Our claims data says they are right to.
Across all nine Land Rover models in the MotorEasy Reliability Index, the engine is either the most claimed-for component or the second most. On four of them the average engine repair is over £3,000. That combination is unusual: on most cars the frequent faults are the cheap ones. On a Land Rover the most likely repair is also one of the most expensive.

Is Land Rover engine failure covered by a warranty?
It depends on the cause, and the distinction matters more here than on most cars.
Sudden mechanical or electrical failure of a covered component is a claim. Gradual wear, and damage caused by a fault you kept driving on, is not. That second point is where Land Rover claims most often come unstuck, because engine problems frequently announce themselves as a warning light or a change in running before they become a failure.
What our data shows about engine repair costs. The Discovery averages £3,740.51 per engine repair, the Range Rover Sport £3,675.49, the Range Rover Velar £3,608.30 and the Range Rover £3,139.71. The Defender averages £2,352.96 and the Discovery Sport £2,034.12.
And how often. Engine claims account for 25% of all claims on the Range Rover Sport to 38% on the Discovery Sport. Roughly a quarter to a third of everything that goes wrong on these cars is engine-related.
When it comes to an engine claim, three things matter most. Report the fault immediately rather than driving on. Keep every service invoice, we will need these! And make sure servicing has followed Land Rover's schedule for the car's age and mileage, including timing components at the correct interval.
Why do I need a Land Rover car warranty?
Beyond the engine, our index shows three further patterns worth knowing.
The gearbox is rare and brutal. Gearbox claims account for between 1% and 13% depending on the model, but the Defender averages £9,502.26 per gearbox repair, the single largest figure in the Land Rover data, on just 4% of claims. The Range Rover Sport (£2,360.08), Evoque (£2,040.33) and Range Rover (£2,025.42) all sit above £2,000.
Suspension splits the range in two. On the Discovery, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport it accounts for an average of 27% of claims, about a quarter of everything. On the Defender it is 3%. If you own one of the larger, air-sprung models, suspension is a recurring cost rather than a footnote.
Electrical faults are constant but cheap. They reach 41% of claims on the Defender 110 and 34% on the Defender, yet average costs stay between £297.56 and £571.83 across every model. These are the faults that make a Land Rover feel unreliable without ever producing a headline bill.
Eight of the nine models score below 5/10 on our scale,, with the Range Rover Sport lowest at 1.1. The exception is the Freelander at 7.1, with average engine repairs of £561.03, and it is the one model here you can no longer buy new.

Which models we cover. Defender (90, 110, 130 and Octa), Discovery, Discovery Sport, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar and Range Rover Evoque, plus older and discontinued models including the Freelander and earlier Discovery and Range Rover generations, within our age and mileage limits.
Range Rover is now marketed as a distinct brand within JLR, but nothing changes on the warranty side. A Range Rover extended warranty is quoted through the same process as any other Land Rover.
What we look at. Your registration gives us model, engine, age and specification, then mileage and cover level. Land Rover quotes vary more by model than most brands, because a Defender and a Velar present very different risk profiles at the same age.
Which plan suits a Land Rover. Plan A is our most extensive. Given engine and gearbox exposure, a plan with broad listed-component cover generally suits a Land Rover better than a narrow one. That is a judgement from our claims data, so check the component schedule for your model.
A straight word on Lite plans. Lite plans cost less and are structured around breakdown and recovery scenarios rather than every listed component. Read that against the data: electrical and suspension are the two most frequent Land Rover fault categories, and a sagging air spring or an intermittent electrical fault will usually still get you home. Full cover generally fits Land Rover ownership better. Check the plan documents for the exact component list before deciding.
Land Rover reliability: common Land Rover repairs
The MotorEasy Reliability Index measures the dependability of a car, as an average of the frequency and cost of repairs for over 1,200 models. It reveals some of the hidden costs of ownership, as well as the likelihood of something going wrong. Each model is assigned a reliability score on a scale from -100 to +100. A score of -100 (red) indicates frequent and/or expensive repairs, while +100 (green) reflects minimal repair needs and low costs.

What actually separates them. Land Rover's plan has genuine strengths, particularly car hire reimbursement and MOT Insurance, neither of which we include. If you are inside its eligibility window and use an Approved Repairer anyway, it is a strong product and worth quoting.
The question is what happens outside that window. Once your Land Rover passes 10 years or 100,000 miles, Land Rover Extended Warranty is no longer available. Our limits are 12 years and 120,000 miles, so there is a band of ownership where we can cover a car and Land Rover will not.
Two things worth doing before you buy anything. If you extend while still inside the three-year manufacturer warranty, Land Rover has offered a free inspection worth up to £250, so timing affects your total cost. And on any Land Rover plan, ask whether per-component claim limits apply to the engine and gearbox. With Defender gearbox repairs averaging £9,502.26, a cap changes what the cover is actually worth.

Does a warranty cover Land Rover engine failure?
Sudden mechanical or electrical failure of a covered component is claimable on our full plans. Wear, and damage that got worse because a warning light was ignored or a service was missed, would not be covered by a MotorEasy warranty or Land Rover's. Given engine claims are the top or second category on all nine models in our index, with four averaging over £3,000, this is the component to check most carefully on any policy you consider.

Can I still get cover if my Land Rover is over 100,000 miles?
Not from Land Rover. Its Extended Warranty requires the vehicle to be under 10 years old with less than 100,000 miles. We cover Land Rovers up to 12 years and 120,000 miles, so there is a window where we can help and the manufacturer cannot.
What happens if my Land Rover warranty has already lapsed?
Land Rover Extended Warranty can be bought while your original warranty is running or within one month of it lapsing. Beyond that, a vehicle check has to be completed before purchase. With us there is no window and no inspection, provided the car meets the age and mileage limits. Pre-existing faults are excluded either way, which is the real reason not to wait.
Does a MotorEasy warranty cover Range Rover models?
Yes. Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar and Evoque are all quoted through the same process. We hold separate reliability data for each and the spread is wide: the Evoque scores 4.7 while the Range Rover Sport scores 1.1.
Is suspension covered?
On our full plans, subject to the component schedule. This is worth asking of any provider if you own a Discovery, Range Rover or Range Rover Sport, where suspension accounts for roughly a quarter of all claims in our index. Wear is not covered by anyone; sudden failure is.
Will off-roading or modifications affect my cover?
Modifications are the bigger risk. Non-standard parts, lifts, wheel and tyre changes or remaps can invalidate cover with us and with Land Rover, since no provider can stand behind parts it did not supply. On use, competitive off-roading, trials and track events are excluded. Land Rover's own Defender Extended Warranty explicitly excludes vehicles used in competition, track days, rally or racing. Ordinary green-laning is a different matter, but declare any modification before you buy.
How do I check my Land Rover warranty online?
Find your date of first registration on the V5C or free via the DVLA vehicle enquiry service, then count three years for the manufacturer warranty. An Approved Service Centre can confirm the exact position from your VIN, including anything a previous owner extended. You’ll find your MotorEasy cover in your account under ‘My Purchased Products’, alongside your vehicle details, stored documents and key dates.
How do I make a claim?
Log in to your MotorEasy account, go to 'My Purchased Products' and click 'Report a fault', as soon as something feels wrong. We book the diagnosis and cover the fee where the fault is covered, our claims team checks it against your plan and authorises the work, then we pay the garage directly. Have your registration, plan number and any service invoices ready. Do not authorise repairs before we approve them.
What happens if my claim is rejected?
We explain why. Usually the component is not listed on your plan, or service history requirements were not met. Service history is the more common issue on Land Rovers, particularly on cars with several previous owners. But don’t worry, If your claim isn’t covered, we can still help manage the repair for you. Our team can liaise with the garage, review the work required and help you get your car repaired at a fair price, so you’re not left to deal with everything yourself.
